Afghan Fighter, Jalalabad, Afghanistan. November 1995
In 1995, shortly before the Taliban took over the majority of the country, it was common to see armed civilians on the streets. This man was happy to have his portrait taken with his AK47 while waiting outside a hospital ward in Jalalabad. On my return in 1997 following the Taliban victory, I would not have been allowed to take this picture and he would not and he would not have been allowed to carry a weapon.
